This novel by Heliodorus was first printed in Basel in 1534; and first translated into French by Jacques Amyot in 1547, an English version appearing in 1569. The novel, which relates the story of an Ethiopian princess who was abandoned at birth and transported to Delphi. There, she was raised by the Greek Charicles under the name of Chariclea and became a Priestess of Artemis. She falls in love with a Thessalian named Theagenes, and they undergo severe hardships, including a shipwreck and separation, before their marriage at the end of the novel.
