SENECA, Lucius Annaeus. Seneca’s Morals, by Way of Abstract. To Which is Added a Discourse, Under the Title of An After-Thought… by Sir Roger L’Estrange, Knt.
Boston: By I. Thomas and E. T. Andrews, 1792. First American edition. With the signature of Col. Philip Marsteller, who held several prominent positions during the American Revolutionary War and was a friend and business associate of George Washington (he was one of the six pallbearers at Washington’s funeral); bookplate of Dr. C. B. Farrar; inscription in Latin by William R. Wilson dated 1796 and his name stamped on title. 8vo., full cont. calf, leather spine label, xxiv, 383pp. With frontispiece and three plates of engravings. Dampstaining and some browning throughout, an early 20th-century catalogue description tipped on to rear pastedown (calling this a “rare” edition), writing on title and endpapers, hole in rear gutter, wear to spine ends, nonetheless a nice example of an American binding of the period. Wing 3425. Evans 24778.
