Some pieces are meieval while others are as late as the early 17th century. Most are drawn from the ‘Percy Folio', though Percy followed the custom of his age and edited the original texts freely. The ‘Reliques' was an important step towards the revival of ballad poetry and its influence was acknowledged by the Romantic poets.' (Cambridge Comp. to Eng. Lit.)
