DU CHAILLU, Paul B. A Journey to Ashango-Land and Further Penetration Into Equatorial Africa.
New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1867. First American edition. Tall 8vo., orig. brown cloth with pictorial vignette in gilt on upper cover, xxiv, 501, 2pp. ads. With 22 plates, and folding map at rear. Name, spine foot chipped, wear to extremities, very good.

Paul Du Chaillu (1831-1903), French-American explorer, author, and hunter, and “the first literate observer to venture far into the interior of western equatorial Africa on foot and to describe living gorillas.” This is an account of his second journey to the Gabon from 1863 to 1865. Having been ridiculed by the scientific community after the publication Explorations & Adventures in Equatorial Africa “he returned to Africa to prove some of his previous statements by scientific observations. His experiences of this two-year trip, including the story of his discovery of the pygmies of the Black Forest” are included in this work. DAB
