ELTZE, Frederick. The New Table Book Or Pictures for Young and Old Parties By... With “A Copy of Verses” to each Picture, and a Page For “Everybody’s Favourite.” Edited by Mark Lemon.
London: Bradbury, Evans and Co., 1867. Large 4to., orig. green cloth with pictorial decoration in gilt on the boards, A.E.G., no pagination. With 25 hand-coloured illustrations (24 plates and a frontispiece). Ownership inscription, this copy has been professionally recased, with wear to the spine repaired with matching green cloth and with the inner front hinge reinforced, but still a not quite near fine copy of an interesting book that is also a parlour game.

Each one of the twenty-four sections includes a full-page colour illustration, a page of verse, and a page printed on both sides in two columns for the recording of “my favourites”--with space for the entry, and the initials of the contributor. For example the section “The Slide” contains an illustration of the same name, depicting boys sliding down a bannister; a verse titled “Dangers of the Rail” and a “My Favourite Statesman” under which various people have written in their “favourites”---Gladstone; Palmerston; Balfour are among those listed. Another section “Seaside Adventures” has a plate (depicting children at the seaside) and poem of the same title, and a page for “My Favourite Opera.” Other examples of the 24 sections include, “Wild Ducks”, “The Autumn Meeting”, “Croquet”, “A Merry Christmas”, “Dressing for the Charade”, and “The Christmas Dinner.” The lists of “Favourites” includes “Kings”, “Authors”, “Books”, “Songs”, and “Actors.” In addition to furnishing the illustrations for the above work, Ertze also contributed illustrations to “Once a Week”, “Punch’s Almanack”, and “The Illustrated Midland News.”
