PEIRCE, Cyrus. Crime: Its Cause And Cure. An Essay.
Boston: Crosby, Nichols & Co., 1854. First edition. Small 8vo., original printed wrappers, 63pp. Very lightly soiled, tiny chip at the foot of the spine otherwise an near fine copy.

Cyrus Peirce [1790-1860] American educator, Unitarian minister, and founding president of the first American normal school (now Framingham State University) in Lexington, MA. In 1853 the American Institute of Instruction awarded Peirce their ‘essay prize' for the above title in which he argued that ‘secular instruction by itself was no guarantee against crime.' As a result, Peirce came under attack from teachers who believed that he was questioning their moral influence on students.
