Boston: Lothrop and Co., nd. (1886). Tall 8vo., original blue decorated cloth, 301pp. Profusely illustrated. Inscription, inner hinge cracked o/w near fine.
A member of the famous Hale family, Susan was the third daughter of Nathan Hale. After studying art in Paris in Germany she returned to the United States in 1872 and began to conduct art classes. Through her lectures and art lessons she opened opportunities for women by exposing them to areas of culture not otherwise available to them. In 1882, with her brother Edward, she embarked on a period of frequent travels abroad which resulted in numerous travel books, including the above, one of the "Family Flight" series. This was a series of travel accounts written primarily for children/young adults.
