New York: Macmillan & Company, 1909. First edition. Tall 8vo., original maroon cloth, (xiv), 262, (2)pp.ads. With illustrations. Discreet name, bookplate but o/w a fine, bright copy.

Percival Lowell [1855-1916] author, mathematician and astronomer who fueld speculation that there were canals on Mars. In 1894 he moved to Flagstaff Arizona where for the next 15 years he studied Mars extensively and made intricate drawings of the surface as he perceived them. His works include detailed descriptions of what he termed the "non-natural features" of the planets surface, instigating speculation that Mars had once sustained intelligent life forms. Lowell's greatest contribution to planetary studies was his search for a planet beyond Neptune, finally discovered after his death by Clyde Tombaugh and named Pluto.
