SELKIRK, Earl of. Observations On The Present State of the Highlands of Scotland, With A View of The Causes and Consequences of Emigration.
London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Rees and Orme..., 1805. First edition. Tall 8vo., full 19th century calf, gilt, leather spine label, (viii), (224), lvi pp. There is a two inch crack in the outer front hinge o/w this is a fine copy.
"In 1792 Thomas Douglas, 5th Earl of Selkirk, undertook an extensive tour through the Scotch Highlands and became convinced that emigration thence was unavoidable. He also recognized the need of some controlling hand to direct it. He first conceived the idea of settlement at Red River (what is now Winnipeg) but this did not materialize until 1811. The above work was partly written as a defence against various reports which had subsequently been spread concerning his colonization schemes. In it he speaks of the tide of emigration to the U.S.A and suggests that this emigration might be turned to Canada. He also speaks at length of the success of his settlement at Prince Edward Island, which he had founded when his first attempts at Red River had not met with success." (Lande).
