London: William P. Nimmo, 1875. Tall 8vo., recently rebound with brown calf spines, marble boards, raised bands, leather spine labels, xix (xx blank), 380; (vii), (viii blank), 408pp. With 11 plates, 2 folding maps and illustrations in the text. There are library stamps on the titlepages and in the margins of several pages throughout as well as on the foredges of both volumes, the binding is fine.
Burton traveled to colder climates to what contemporaries referred to as "the most difficult and expansive country in the world," in order to see these "scenes of thrilling horror, of majestic grandeur, and of heavenly beauty" which he felt must have been greatly exaggerated. Burton planned a sequel to this work but it was never published.
