WILDE, Oscar. For Love of the King.
London: Methuen, (1922). First edition. 1 of 1000 copies. 8vo., orig. gilt stamped ivory cloth, T.E.G., (18), (40)pp. Cloth somewhat discoloured as is common, a bit of soiling to the spine ends but still a much better than very good (not quite near fine) copy. In the original dustwrapper which has chipping to the spine ends but is still very good.
The introduction states that Wilde wrote this in 1894 as a gift to his friend Mrs. Chan Toon (Mabel Cosgrove) but shortly after publication Wilde biographer Mason sued the publisher for trying to pass off this work as Wilde's. It is believed that Cosgrove wrote it and gave the manuscript to Methuen. The resulting scandal ensured that Methuen did not reprint the work again.
