With a signed presentation inscription from the author. 8vo., orig. purple cloth, 332, (8)pp.ads. With 4 plates by Cruikshank. Spine faded to tan o/w a near fine copy. Dudley Costello [1803-1865] English journalist and traveller. After leaving Sandhurst, Costello was stationed with his regiment in India, North America and the West Indies. He left the army and went to Paris where he eventually worked with his sister copying illuminated manuscripts for the Bilbliotheque Royale. Their work was largely responsible in the revived interest in illuminated work during this period. He returned to London where he served as the foreign correspondent for the "Morning Herald", "Daily News" and contributed to several periodicals. The author of several travel books, the above is an interesting work dealing with the elements of the |
