TWAIN, Mark. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations.
New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885. First American edition, early issue, with most of the first issue points. With the following points: we believe the titlepage is a cancel (difficult to tell with the rebacking) with the copyright notice 1884 (BAL second state with the first state noted only in publisher's prospectuses and advance sheets); p. 13 the illustration "Him and Another Man" is listed at p.88 (BAL first state); p.57 the 11th line from the bottom reads "with the was" (BAL first state); p.283 leaf is a cancel and the line in the trousers is, with slight variation, a straight vertical line (BAL state 3--BAL notes state 1 has been
seen only in early prospectuses and in leather bound copies, and state 2 has not been found in a copy of the published book); p 155- final 5 has been replaced (BAL state 3 however the position of the "5" has subsequently been proven to not be an indication of a states); the frontispiece is BAL first state with the imprint of the Heliotype Printing Company and the tablecloth visible. We can not determine the state of leaf 238 due to the reback with new e/papers. Tall square 8vo., orig. green pictorial cloth, 366, (2) blank leaves. This copy has been professionally rebacked with new e/papers and additional blank leaves in the front with the original spine laid down, the two original blank leaves and the frontispiece have been reinforced with white archival tape at the gutter, the frontispiece is soiled and somewhat stained, some occasional foxing, with light wear to the lower edge of the boards and corners but this is still an acceptable copy of this classic of American fiction. BAL 3415.
