London: Printed by I Norton, for John Maynard, and Timothy Wilkins, and are to be sold at the George in Fleetstreet near Saint Dunstans Church, 1641. First edition. With the bookplate of Stillman Drake. Sm. 8vo., early 20th century full leather, (12), 180pp. With woodcuts in the text. Titlepage mounted, lacking the blanks, (A1, M7, M8) as usual, corner torn off B3 not affecting text, two wormholes in signature M affecting a few words, a few notes in a contemporary hand but in fact a very good copy of a scarce book.

John Wilkins [1614 -1672] Bishop of Chester and Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1641 Wilkins published this small but comprehensive work on cryptography. The book discusses a wide range of ideas associated with communication and language. Wilkins was a founder and first Secretary of the Royal Society. He was the author of a number of works including "A Discourse Concerning a New Planet " in which he used argumetns similar to those of Galileo, "An Essay Towards a real Character and a Philosohical Language," and "The Discovery of a World In the Moon."
