William Spottiswoode [1825-1883], English mathematician and physicist. Spottiswoode's scientific bent reared its head early in his life as his removal from Eton to Harrow was occasioned by "an accidental explosion which occurred when he was performing an experiment for his own amusement." He left Oxford in 1846 to take his fathers place in the business, the firm of Eyre & Spottiswoode, printers. He frequently issued publications containing original mathematical work. In 1856 he travelled to Russia and published the above work, an

informative account of his journey, "a narrative as simple and genuine as it is enlivening and spirited." Spottiswoode's journey from St. Petersburgh provides useful information on the travel conditions of the day.
