(French) CATS, Jakob. L'Art du Mariage, poéme latin de J. Cats, ... avec le commentaire de Lidius, traduits en français, avec le texte en regard. Paris: Chez Barrois l'Ainé, 1830. 8vo., full morocco, paneled in gilt, spine gilt in compartments; inner dentelles gilt, A.E.G,; the binding is by Capé. A fine copy. PP. [1]-15 consist of a biographical sketch of Cats, and the rest of the text is devoted to the poem on marriage, with Latin and French on facing pages. Cundall, "On Bookbindings Ancient and Modern", 1881; Ramsden, "French Bookbinders 1789-1848", 1950. Cats (1577-1660) was a Dutch Poet and politician; his works are numerous but with few exceptions were written in Dutch only. This was one of the exceptions, having been written in Latin and translated by Barrois. Cape was one of a group of artistic binders, of a school established by Thouvenin, to which some of the very best binders of the nineteenth century belonged, and became the "relieur du Roi au Louvres" - the King's binder at the Louvre. His work does not appear often and his name is hardly mention in the works of the period. This volume has also a lovely French bookplate, and a presentation inscription, signed by the brother of the translator, A. Barrois. A beautiful book. $650.00 |
