First edition in French. 4to., full contemporary calf, raised bands, gilt compartments, xii, (1)-259, (3)pp. With 3 engraved folding maps, 9 engraved folding plates, and 11 folding tables (in the pagination) with other tables in the text. Bookplate, spine ends chipped, front hinge tender (small crack at top) but in fact a near fine copy of an important book. "An important addition to early nautical science in the polar regions." (Hill p.207). The expedition reached nearly 81 degrees north and was finally blocked by ice, but the results were lasting as the history of polar exploration east of Greenland begins with this voyage. |
