FULLER, Thomas. The Holy State. Cambridge: Printed by R.D. for John Williams..., 1648. Second edition, enlarged. 4to., recently rebound in full dark brown calf after the period, raised bands, blind stamped borders on covers, (8), 510pp. [A4, B-Pp6, Qq8]. With engraved portraits in the text. Near fine. Thomas Fuller [1608–1661], English clergyman and author. He was an able preacher and a noted wit. He adhered to the royalist cause during the civil war and the Commonwealth and served briefly as a royal chaplain. He is best known for his posthumously published Worthies of England (1662), an invaluable store of antiquarian information. The Holy State and the Prophane State was first published in 1642. This work describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life, gives rules of conduct, model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. It was perhaps the most popular of all his writings. $1,250.00 |
