BERKELEY, Grantley F. Fact Against Fiction. The Habits and Treatment of Animals Practically Considered; Hydrophobia and Distemper; With Some Remarks on Darwin.
London: Samuel Tinsley, 1874. In two volumes. First edition. Tall 8vo., orig. red cloth stamped in gilt and black, (xvi), 349; (vi), 349pp. Some light soiling but in fact a near fine copy.
Grantley Berkeley [1880-1881] English politician and sportsman. Berkeley served for 20 years as a member for West Gloucestershire. His first work, "Berkeley Castle" a historical romance in three volumes. After reading a savage review of the novel in Fraser's Magazine, Berkerley confronted the publisher James Fraser and assaulted him. Several days later, Berkeley fought a duel with William Maginn, the author of the review. Berkely wrote one other novel, books and pamphlets on hunting and the above title, which gives a practical account of the habits and treatment of animals. Specifically he provides a treatise on dogs and their diseases and treatment and place in our society. (DNB).
