A. The TRUE and GENUIN ELEGY OF Matthew Gun Bookseller
Printed by Will Rueter at the Aliquando Press in 2014. 1 of 125 copies. 15" x 10 1/2". Printed on Hahnemuble white mould paper in Garamond, ATF Baskerville and XIV Century Roman. This is a reprint of an early 18th-century broadside. The original is held by the British Library and we have been unable to locate another copy. We felt this reprint to be a timely one given the precarious state of the book trade these days; Gun’s lament resonates strongly. A fine work by one of Canada’s foremost designers and private printers.

"Back was disquieted by rumours about John Ross, who had not been heard of since he had set out on an attempt at a northwest passage in 1829. Back returned to England at once and offered to command a search. He learned that Dr Richardson had already submitted a plan for reaching Ross by way of the Thlew-ee-choh or Great Fish River (Back River), a river known only by Indian report, which was supposed to rise somewhere near Great Slave Lake and flow northwest into the Arctic Ocean. Richardson had received insufficient support and stepped down. Back adopted the same plan and raised enough support from the government, the HBC, and public subscription to go ahead with the expedition under the direction of the Colonial Office. Taking with him Dr Richard King as naturalist, Back left Liverpool by packet for New York on 17 Feb. 1833. In June he was at Fort Alexander on Lake Winnipeg, where George Simpson, now governor of all the HBC’s activities overseas, greeted him cordially, apparently having forgotten their brush in 1821.From Fort Resolution Back set out to search for the Thlew-ee-choh and located it on 29 August. He then returned to the expedition’s wintering station, Fort Reliance, at the eastern end of Great Slave Lake. When news reached him in spring 1834 of Ross’s safe return to England, it only remained for him to explore the Thlew-ee-choh and the seacoast adjoining its mouth. On 7 June 1834 his party left the fort for their depot on Artillery Lake, and, travelling by Clinton-Colden Lake and Aylmer Lake, reached the Thlew-ee-choh on 28 June. The descent of this river took them one month, after which they spent three weeks exploring Chantrey Inlet. Poor weather prevented their making a more extensive survey of the sea-coast, and they were back in Fort Reliance on 27 September. On 21 March 1835 Back left for England, leaving King to follow with the men and equipment." (DCB). TPL 1873; Arctic Bib. 851; Sabin 2613.

47. (SWITZERLAND) COCKBURN, Major (James Pattison). Swiss Scenery From Drawings By...
London: Published By Rodwell & Martin, 1820. First edition. 4to., recently rebound with a dark brown calf spine, marble boards, raised bands, gilt decoration in the compartments, leather spine label, vii, 200pp. With 60 engraved plates and an engraved titlepage. Titlepage a bit ragged around edges, some repairs to the last leaf (no loss to text, repairs are in the margins only), occasional foxing but still a near fine copy. James Pattison Cockburn [1779-1847] army officer and water-colourist..... According to German composer Louis Spohr, to whom he showed more than 200 landscapes of Naples and its surroundings, Cockburn had “extraordinary skill in catching charming views in a matter of minutes.” He was becoming an indefatigable sketcher. In the period 1816–22 he produced drawings in sepia as he moved from place to place in the Alps and elsewhere in Italy and Switzerland: vast panoramas and mountain passes figured alongside scenes of streets and market places. The wealth of pictures is explained not only by Cockburn’s mastery of technical means but also, according to Spohr, by his use of “a machine that projected the landscape, in reduced scale, on paper.” Although it is not certain that Spohr was referring to a camera lucida, the sharpness of the images in several sketches done at the time he made his remark in some measure substantiates this hypothesis...." In the 1820's Cockburn was posted to Upper and Lower Canada and "during these years of peace Cockburn had ample leisure to sketch Quebec and its environs as well as scenes in Upper and Lower Canada where his tours of inspection took him." Amsterdam: Van Den Derge, 1660. First edition. 4to., full contemporary vellum, title in black ink on the spine, (44), 1002, (60)pp. Containing five works, including De Praestigiis Daemonum," "Liber Apologeticus" and (with separate titlepages ) "De Lamiis Liber," (p.667); "De Irae Morbo" (p.771) and "Weiri Medicarum Obervationum....liber II." The facsimile is of the recto only (*4r) therefore the portrait of the author which is printed on the verso of the original leaf is lacking in this copy, bookplate, binding somewhat soiled with some brown staining to rear board, boards a bit sprung o/w a near fine copy of this important work. Johann Meyer [1515-1588] physician and demonologist. Weyer studied medicine at Orleans and the University of Paris, where he received his doctor's degree in 1537. In years following he railed against the pretensions of the Inquisition and its guide book, The Malleus Maleficarum. His conflict with the Church caused him to seek the protection as physician to Duke William V of Julich-Cleve-Berg. In his major work De Praestigiis Daemonum et Incantationibus ac Veneficiis (1563) Meyer denounced witch hunters for extracting confessions under torture, noting that extreme hardship would force even the most innocent to confess. Weyer offered a voice of reason, claiming mental disease rather than demonic possession. His works, published as the above Opera Omnia in 1660 was immediately placed on the Index Librorum Prohitorum by the Church. Weyer was "first of all an astute clinical observer...he demonstrated clearly in case after case, that mental illness was a completely separate entity from the ignorance, superstition and hallucinations which together made 'witches' out of innocent people. He insisted and conclusively showed that mental illness, like any other human illness, should be treated by physicians, and not the Church and State. His critical analysis of the scourge of witchcraft his scientific, descriptive, observational approach to the problem, are the very roots of modern psychiatry, for his was the first statement clearly to demonstrate psychopathology as something apart from the work of the Devil. While not immediate, his influence was far reaching, reflected in the reforms started by Pinel, Esquirol, Freud and others."

The Pope's Bookbinder
A Memoir

By David Mason

Biblioasis, 2013.
420 pages. Illustrated.
$37.95(CAD).
A memoir of Mason’s forty-five years in the booktrade. After some years in Europe doing odd jobs, including a period doing bookbinding in Spain, and reading incessantly, Mason returned to Canada, apprenticed in the book trade with Joseph Patrick Books and has been selling used and rare books ever since. His memories include the books dealers, collectors, and libraries he has dealt with over that period.

“For anyone who loves books too well – who lusts after them, lives in them, mainlines them – David Mason’s memoir will be a fix from heaven. Heartful, cantankerous, droll, his tales of honour and obsession in the trade gratify the very book-love they portray. An irresistible read.”
– Dennis Lee

“Entertaining, moving, informative, intelligently hopeful: I know of few other books like this one to warm the cockles of a booklover’s heart.”
– Alberto Manguel
